OK, let’s think about this. I’m an outsider, in the UK. There are seriously important values and principles at the very heart of the foundation of the USA, and an enormous spirit of optimism and potential and determination within the spirit and character of its people. On that basis, I am actually happy with the idea of America as continuing to provide significant leadership in the world. Except on gun control. And religion. And lack of support for the situation of the Palestinians. And hysteria about Iran. And support for that brutal primitive rubbish regime in Saudi Arabia. And anyone who thinks that a “socialist” principle — such as about providing decent fundamental medical care regardless of means, which is perfectly possible in other countries — is something which is akin to a swear word, or equivalent not to “socially responsible and unselfish and compassionate” but to “frightening, economically ridiculous and incompetent”. I won’t mention voting in political leaders who are apparently a bit short on intellect and integrity, as believe me, we’ve all been guilty of that.
