I’ve just published my book on Kindle, telling the story from parental messages of not being good enough, to realising that actually I can do stuff. I’ve linked the various episodes in my life to leadership insights and frameworks that mean a great deal to me. I believe that many people disqualify themselves from providing leadership — and the world is a poorer place for it. It’s been great to write and reflect on my story — and to experience key people from my past come back to life and being able to appreciate their input. I hope I can be that influential to those who look to me.

I was struck by Simon Sinek’s question “Are you a Leader, or someone who leads?” That fits with my experience that many people who can provide leadership disqualify themselves because their self image doesn’t fit the picture of the larger than life leader. This is really disastrous for them and for their organisations because their insight, energy and expertise is lost. Leaders develop and encourage leadership in those who work with them and for them. We need more of this today to cope with the complexity of life!
