Echosmith Talks New Single ‘Over My Head,’ Upcoming Sophomore Album
“We’ve been intentional about every moment,” Sydney Sierota says.
Echosmith is on the road again, and siblings Sydney, Noah and Graham Sierota couldn’t be more thrilled. They’re also gearing up to release their highly-anticipated second studio album, and their sparkling new single “Over My Head” is sitting pretty at №28 on the Adult Pop Songs chart.
As the band tells Billboard, the bold, synth-driven song is a roadmap of sorts for their next era.“It’s a progression,” Sydney says. “It’s still Echosmith at the core — there are still real drums, real bass, the same girl singing — but I do feel like it sounds older. We are five or six years older than we were when we recorded our first album, so naturally, there are a lot of changes that happen.”
The story behind the song is relatable to different situations, depending on how Sydney feels in the moment when she steps onstage. “Certain days, it feels like it’s more about a friend, or it’s more about my boyfriend, or it’s about one of my brothers,” she explains. “But it’s just about miscommunication and misunderstandings, which happens in every type of relationship, no matter how hard you try.” “Over My Head” is also a departure from the happy-go-lucky songs that some fans might be used to hearing from Echosmith. “It was interesting to do a song that was a lot more honest about feeling you get when you’re…not so excited about life,” Sydney says. The track is a great example of what the band has been working on over the past few years: namely, their next full-length album, date TBD. “It’s a good representation of what’s to come, and we’re really excited about that,” Noah says, adding that the record is basically done, but still needs a name.
“We don’t even know!” Sydney laughs. “That’s the problem. We’ve given ourselves the goal of having a name before tour ends. But that’s three weeks away, and I have zero ideas,” she says. “Maybe it’ll just be ‘Untitled.’”
On their current tour, the band has already hit the West Coast, and will make stops in New York City and Washington, D.C. this weekend. (Check out the remaining dates below.) It’s their first big tour in a while, and Sydney admits it was nerve-wracking at first. “We were so used to being at home, but once I got on stage it was totally fine, and it’s been amazing,” she says. “The crowds are encouraging — and they make me forget how tired I might be.” The live setting is pretty natural for the band, who played shows all the time when they started out. “It’s such a joy to be on stage singing with the fans and having that communal experience,” Noah says. Adds Sydney: “We’ve been intentional about every moment, making sure every moment feels like a moment; that we aren’t just going through the motions.”
The band plans to be on the road for a long time once they roll out this new chapter. “It feels like the beginning of something new,” Sydney says. “There are awesome tweets and comments about how good the show made them feel, and we want to do it bigger and better. We want to keep improving our set.” Fans are already singing “Over My Head” back to them, which she describes as a “cool” feeling.
Speaking of which — when their breakout hit “Cool Kids” is brought up, Noah speaks without an ounce of weariness. “We were doing Warped Tour our first year, and no one knew who we were beforehand,” he says. “But people began singing it and there was a moment, especially in Denver, I think, that we knew there was something special going on with that song. We loved watching that grow and develop.”
The “Cool Kids” have, if you will, matured into Cool Adults.
