Nixon as Alice
I’ve been looking for a Herbert Block (Herblock) cartoon that ran in the Washington Post circa 1970, around the time of the Cambodian invasion. It showed President Richard Milhous Nixon as Alice, complete with long hair, pinafore, ski-jump nose and six o’clock shadow.
Nixon is smiling tremulously at South Vietnamese president Nguyen Van Thieu and vice president Nguyen Kao Ky, whom Herblock depicted as Tweedledum and Tweedledee.
Herblock based his cartoon on John Tenniel’s classic illustration for chapter four of Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There (1871).
The cartoon caption said something like: “Which is the way out of the woods? said Alice, and the two little men looked at each other and smiled.”
