The city of Grande Prairie, located in Northwest of Alberta is one of the most happening cities in Canada. It is currently the 7th largest city of Alberta with a population of 63,166. Popularly known by the term “swan city” this is often a great place to for bird lovers as it’s not uncommon to see the rare swan bird flying overhead. It is a common summer nesting place and migration route of swans and people from all over the country visit this city to enjoy them in thousands!

Not a fan of swans? Don’t worry, let your tour partners enjoy your swan time while you can have a larger than life experience with the dinosaurs! Yup, you heard me. This city has had a lot of paleontological discoveries and you will get a once in a lifetime opportunity to rub shoulders with real dinosaur skeletons.

Grande Prairie is a favorite choice to settle in among many people of the country. If you have the choice, definitely do not hesitate to experience the beautiful life that this city offers. Otherwise, you simply must plan a trip to this city because you haven’t lived life till you’ve been to Grande Prairie.

10 THINGS TO DO WHEN YOU VISIT GRANDE PRAIRIE, ALBERTA

1. THE DINOSAURS OF COURSE!

Hang out with larger than life buddies at the Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum. This is actually a new-ish attraction to this city and is what Royal Tyrrell Museum is to the North.

This museum opened in the month of September 2015. It features a variety of attractions including a huge theatre, dinosaur galleries, collection/ research areas and a massive bone bed outdoors where visitors can enjoy a 2 hour fossil discovery walk.

2. TRY OUT ALL THE FOOD!

Here are some of the city’s favorites you simply must try!

• Tacos with fish and shrimp at El Norteno

• Pescatore Linguine at the Italian Ristorante called Pandrino

• Barbecued juicy ribs at Better Than Fred’s

• Bento box and boat sushi & sashimi at Soto Japanese

Check out all of the food by the vendors inside the Farmer’s market in the city. The produce is fresh, and they will make all the food right in front of your eyes!

Bison is indigenous to Alberta, and you should definitely try out all the bison food including bison meatballs, bison lasagna, etc.

3. VISIT ALL GRANDE PRAIRIE PARKS AND THE GIANT MONUMENTS

We all love nature and ‘giant’ nature art pieces will make great Instagram pictures! This city has got its own fair share of giant statues, and they have two right in the middle of Grande Prairie. Some of the most popular ones are statue GP Trumpeter Swan in Jubilee Park. This is the city’s emblem because Grande Prairie houses the largest swan flocks in the country.

Another must visit is the Grande Prairie giant sundial. At a height of over 40 feet, this structure was made to celebrate the passage of 2000 millennium celebrations.

4. THE DISCOVERY CENTRE — GP HERITAGE

If you have spent all your money already and are broke, than the GP Heritage Discovery Centre will welcome you for free admission. You will learn a lot more about the city’s heritage and the Peace Country. This exhibit begins with dinosaurs and progresses in chronological order about the evolution of the region and the people.

The building itself is beautiful and was well designed and thought out. One of the most prominent features is seeing the beautiful metal roof repair by Delta T & Protective Products located just on the outskirts of the city of Grande Prairie.
