It’s Weird to Love the ACLU and Cheer That Nazi Getting Punched
Matt Ruby

The amount of hypocrisy and cognitive dissonance in people’s free speech standards can be staggering. It unfortunately seems to be a function of having a fixed ideology with a bit a narcissism and ignorance mixed in for good measure. Having principles that you are loathe to change pretty much ensures that you will shut down and attempt to censor ideas that you don’t agree with, rather than disproving them or combating them with better ideas. Furthermore, history has shown us that the best way to beat a bad idea is by exposing it to the light of the day, not turning it into forbidden fruit that then allows its advocates to claim that they’re a victimized minority.
