How you configure your GCP environment will have an influence on everything you do within GCP. Designing your GCP organisation so it maps to your organisation reflecting how your developers, data scientists , operational ( sys admins, security , network admins etc ) work with GCP and how you deploy your applications through the test , QA and production stages all need to be taken into consideration. If you need to track costs per teams and/or applications then this also needs to be factored into the design. Thus carrying out the following steps provides the foundation for deploying your application.

  • Map your organisation to Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
  • Configure your organisation using Cloud Identity.
  • Set up a billing account and permissions.
  • Configure the Cloud Resource Manager hierarchy.
  • Grant permissions to users and groups.
  • Configure your development resources

Here’s a few docs you should read first :

Guide to Cloud Billing Resource organization & Access Management

Then when you’re ready to start setting up your GCP organisation use this checklist and the one in the guide to Cloud billing resource organization & Access Management (We’ll reference that again in the cost optimization checklist )

If you have a look at the actual gist on GitHub you can see some notes associated with some of the items in the checklist

A list of all the checklists in the series can be found here
