A Brief History of Mother’s Day

While celebrations of motherhood date to ancient civilizations such as the Greeks and Romans, who honored cultural goddesses with festivals, the modern concept of Mother’s Day has its roots in the United States.

The visionary behind Mother’s Day in the United States was Anna Jarvis, a compassionate woman from West Virginia. Following the Civil War, Jarvis dedicated herself to educating women on the importance of nurturing and caring for their children. Inspired by her desire to recognize and honor the sacrifices made by mothers, she conceived the idea of a special day dedicated to celebrating motherhood.

In 1908, Jarvis successfully organized the first Mother’s Day celebration in West Virginia, thanks to the support she garnered. By 1912, several states had adopted Mother’s Day as an annual holiday. Finally, in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day, cementing its place in the national calendar.

Happy Mother’s Day!
