The Truth About Face Masks

Facial masks can provide equivalent benefits as spa facials, at the comfort of your own home! Any skin type can benefit from using them, whether it’s dry, oily or ageing skin and there’s a wide variety of products to match any skin type’s needs. Different masks have different benefits, from drawing out impurities, eliminating dead skin cells, to tightening and toning the skin.

Masks are a great addition to your skincare regimen, but should never replace a full skincare routing with cleanser, toner, moisturiser, etc.

The way facial masks work is by covering all areas of the skin, except around the eyes and mouth, allowing the active ingredients to penetrate into the deepest layers of the skin.

They are usually applied after cleansing and kept on for 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the type of mask used. Some masks, such as hydrating mask, can even be left overnight for better results.

TYPES OF MASKS:

CLAY MASKS — NORMAL TO OILY SKIN

Clay masks are great for oily to normal skin as they are usually made of kaolin and can contain ingredients, like salicylic acid, which can help to fight acne.

Kaolin is effective in absorbing excess oils, draw out impurities and removing dead skin cells, while tightening the pores, and is usually applied on the oilier areas of the skin, like T zone.

HYDRATING MASKS — NORMAL TO DRY SKIN

Hydrating masks are usually used to provide hydration and helps to repair more dry skin. There are a variety of products available with many different ingredients, like camomile, pumpkin, cucumber, yoghurt, rosewater and green tea, that supply skin with essential nutrients and vitamins. Unlike clay masks, hydrating masks can be left as an overnight treatment.

FIRMING AND ANTI-AGEING MASKS — AGEING SKIN

These masks are full of antioxidants and ingredients (e.g. licorice extract, acai berry extract, kojic acid, retinol, etc.) which help detox and rejuvenate the skin, and are specially made for ageing skin. They help target ageing signs, like rough skin texture, fine lines and wrinkles, making the skin appear more smooth and radiant.

Remember, just like with any other skin care product, a good facial mask should contain ingredients beneficial for the skin and not cause skin to reach.
