Autumn is right around the corner, meaning summer is finally leaving things in the hands of the golden leaf season, where plants prepare for the cold winter. This means you have a few things to do before, as winter means your plants and garden must be protected against frost.

Let’s point out the important gardening jobs you need to handle soon

Clean Old and Dead Plants

By the time the year is out, your garden’s borders will very likely start filling up with older, dead or dying plants on the surface. This is an excellent time to clear them out before the first snowfall, as quickly as possible. You’ll want to get rid of these plants because they cannot only become an eyesore, but you will have a more challenging time clearing them out later. Colder weather means you will start using your garden far less, but you still need to keep it looking great and presentable. Another reason you should clear out the old growth is that it may become harmful to the surrounding, healthier plants, as it may become a breeding ground for pests and disease. If you don’t take care of these areas, this may affect your plants in the coming years.

Raking Up Fallen Leaves

With autumn arriving, falling leaves will start blanketing your garden. Even though they are a pretty addition to most places, you need to stay on top of raking them if you want to keep your garden looking good. If they are left alone for too long, the task will become more and more challenging to deal with in the long run. Due to this, you should rake them up regularly to keep the garden looking good during the autumn and winter months. If you avoid that responsibility, they will start decaying and potentially become a breeding ground for diseases and pests. Diseases within the leaf piles may become dangerous to your lawn and the surrounding piles if they spread and they’re not contained in a compost pile.

Spike and Aerate the Lawn

Taking care of the lawn during autumn will ensure your yard is in perfect condition when winter rolls in. Autumn is the last chance you have to prepare the lawn for the cold winter months ahead. One of the ways you can do that is to spike and aerate it. The compact ground prevents grass from growing well, and it may stifle the grassroots in the winter months. Aerating it will help relieve the compact ground and let the roots breathe, encouraging new growth. Pushing your garden fork into the lawn about ten centimetres deep and then gently moving it back and forth is all you need to do. It’s a perfect way to open up the soil and prepare it for the rains of the autumn season.

Recut and Shape the Lawn

October is a great time to start preparing the lawn for winter. Edging the lawn is adding finishing touches and ensuring it looks good. Use a set of shears and start neatening the edges of the lawn and borders, creating a better finish. Edging also creates a suitable barrier in the soil to prevent roots from invading the garden beds or other locations.

Go Snail Hunting

As the weather becomes damper, pests like snails will be showing up more often. They tend to eat younger and more vulnerable plants, so causing damage to those may affect your garden’s growth. For that reason, you should go out and address the issue.
