Thank you for your thoughtful response. It’s only through reasonable, respectful debate that we will solve any of the problems facing our country, including this one. Here are some steps I think our lawmakers should take. First of all, the guns themselves have to be considered, and for that we need to fully fund research, both through the CDC and other research organizations, into guns and gun violence, so that we can come from an informed position. Second, we have to legally define and categorize the type of guns that I am talking about, those that can kill a lot of people really fast, along with accessories that can make a gun more lethal, so that we are all on the same page with the definitions. Next, the legislation I would like to see enacted, and that I think is a reasonable compromise, is twofold. First, ban the SALE and commercial MANUFACTURE of these weapons, once we have a legal definition of what they are. Second, institute buy back programs. This would NOT make owning this type of gun illegal, so if you already have one no one would take it away from you, it would just mean you can’t sell it on the open market. You can sell it back to the government or a law enforcement agency, but you can’t sell it to a person. This would lead to a reduction in the number of these guns on the streets just by attrition. People who already own these types of guns and are law abiding citizens wouldn’t have anything taken away from them, but we wouldn’t be adding more and more of these weapons to our country on a daily basis.
