Life on Earth and the invention of P.L.A.N.T

[YEAR 2950] Earth. After rebounding from war, disease and famine, humankind finally found peace, working together for the betterment of society and advancement of technology. They had begun to look to the stars and conduct experiments on nearby planets, with a miraculous device called P.L.A.N.T (Plant Life and Neutron Terraformer). The discovery of P.L.A.N.T. happened by chance, when scientists were studying the mycelium underground network of fungus and stumbled across a fundamental library of evolutionary DNA. This data led to a cascade of scientific advancements and eventually to a huge breakthrough, allowing humans to hack neurochemistry, almost eradicating mental illness and cognitive decline overnight. These advancements for humanity led to the creation of the P.L.A.N.T. device. When set into place, P.L.A.N.T. could reactivate and even create life in desolate areas. Its technology was so sophisticated that the device’s settings could be tailored to the genetic makeup of specific demographics and geographies.

After years of using this new-found technology to restore life on Earth and regrow the surface, humans now looked to the stars. Countless P.L.A.N.T. devices were detonated across Mars’ periphery and the results that came back to the laboratory weeks later, were astonishing. The small nanobots had dug all the way down to the molten layer of the planet, where they settle and release small amounts of radiogenic heat, which extend the planet’s core durability. Next, mycelial spores — containing plant DNA — burrow their way into the tunnels which the nanites dug previously. These spores grow into a vast network of roots able to communicate with each other, dispersing across the planet. After a few months, funghi sprout, which releases a complex variety of gasses that help stabilize the planet’s atmosphere. Within 5 years, P.L.A.N.T. could completely restore the health of a planet that was previously dying.

Across the galaxy…..

[YEAR 2997] On Worlorn, a planet situated deep within the oldest habitable galaxy, planetary resources had become scarce and unsustainable. Zeons, the alien race living on Worlorn, had used up most of the planet’s natural matter, converting it into fuel for their interplanetary travels. The planet’s overall decay proved harder and harder to hide from general Zeon society and consequences of it started slowly leaking to the public. Without intervention and with the intensified travels in search of a new planet, the Zeon race could be completely wiped out within 5 to 10 years. Worlorn would be drained beyond repair.

The tension and pressure of this looming existential crisis, had led to friction within Zeon society and a split within the highest levels of government, The Royals and The Gargun. The Royals were convinced the answer could be found by exploring other planets in search of a cure, in the process accelerating the destruction of Worlorn. The Gargun faction however, believed it would be better to try and focus on adjusting their way of life and building out their technology, to survive on what was left of their planet.

When technology failed the Zeons, efforts were shifted to focus predominantly on scanning the galaxy for healthy planets. A small planet, more distant than any planet the Zeons had ever traveled to, caught their eye and preliminary investigation showed an abundance of resources. It also showed that primitive beings already inhabited this planet and again, the Royal and Gargun faction disagreed on tactics. The Royals, a more military-oriented faction, wished to overpower the planet’s inhabitants to maximize the use of the planet’s resources. The Garguns wished for a more cooperative approach, in the hope that these beings could share their knowledge on how to preserve a planet. They hoped some of that knowledge could even be applied to Worlorn, if they weren’t too late in saving it.

After much talk and deliberation, the Gargun and Royalist faction agreed they would opt for a diplomatic approach, which would give them the highest chances of acquiring support and knowledge from the beings on the other planet. Some Royalist’s saw this as a massive defeat and in secrecy, started plotting a long-term scheme to implement a strategy to fulfill their original plans.

After a couple of months of preparation and research, mostly into figuring out the best diplomatic approach, almost 200,000 Zeons embarked on their mission to reach the lush, green planet. Intergalactic travel and crossing the millions of lightyears between Worlorn and the new planet, would also take the Zeons a couple of months. Even with the natural material converter to maximize their velocity, bridging the distance was still enormous.

It wasn’t until 2998, that the first Zeon ships landed on Earth — as this planet was called. Although first acquaintances were a bit rough, both Zeons and humans had no bad intentions towards each other and it did not take long for them to establish a collaborative relationship. Zeons, a much more advanced species than humankind, brought many new technologies that provided humanity with a variety of innovative opportunities, such as intergalactic travel, smart autonomous mining equipment and the introduction to deep space metals. In exchange, Zeons asked humans to teach them how they could grow plants and take care of their dying planet Worlorn.

Many months of peaceful negotiations later, the Zeon convinced Earth’s leaders that the P.L.A.N.T. device might be able to rejuvenate their dying planet of Worlorn. Humans, who were grateful for the learning opportunities of an initial joint intergalactic expedition, agreed to travel to Worlon with a large group of scientists, engineers and explorers. Both humans and the group of Zeon Garguns remained utterly unaware of the Royal’s evil scheming, preparing to take Earth and its resources by force.
