Yeah, I know this is possible. I use it in my app.
But every time I tell this to people using it (mostly non-tech, so I have to point it out to them), or even just other freelance clients - it is painful. It makes it seem like my app is of poor quality. And if I don’t tell them, they probably will never know that it is possible.
The opposing view a lot of people are stating though is the spam aspect of it, which I didn’t consider quite enough before writing this. I can see where people are coming from there.
But what I’m building — a legitimate web app — I should be able to prompt the user to add it to the home screen. If Apple is abstaining due to spam concerns, why be so secretive about it? Why not be more transparent about where they are with these things? That is my issue.
