Thanks for the response David. Yes, I love the ReWork book. Those guys have solid knowledge. And yes, it does take some practice.

I think you start to get a feel for where you might be going too fast on something and need more time, and where you might be dragging your feet. In design especially, nothing is really ever “done”. Things come to a current version of finished, but that’s always changing with iteration. Same thing with any task…you’re probably going to come back to it tomorrow with a different point of view, or different thought entirely. It’s just collectively about making your day efficient, and dedicated. It’s hard, and no I don’t meet my own deadlines all the time…however I do think of them as a fun challenge to do really good work…when it happens that way.

Distractions are hard. Open environments are hard. So a task list, for me at least, works well to get things done.
