Thanks for the report on the campaign and on the Dec. 9 call. I found it to be well-balanced.
To grossly simply some big complex issues: I think it would be *relatively* easy to replicate, extend and improve Twitter’s functions with an all-new code base, for an investment in the low millions instead of the low billions.
Of course, it’d be futile to do that without a massive effort to build community, and to integrate the ‘replacement’ platform with media sharing at twitter and facebook, etcetera. However, spending almost $7 billion less would create significant opportunities to build a user base.
The real question IMO is financial and ethical sustainability. I work lots in open source p2p network design and alternative advertising models, etcetera, so I have no shortage of opinions on related subjects.
