So this is what 4am looks like…I see that the two lights in the darkness of my life belong to my computer, who would have known?

The first day of my personal self-improvement challenge. Allow me to get all the cliches out the way:

  • I’ve started, no more talking just action
  • Not a clue how to write my first blog post so let me just write and cross my fingers and dreads hoping this works
  • Let me start the post with a mention of cliches because the inherent irony of doing so is that I’m now being cliche.

Good got that out of the way!

Why am I typing this though? Because, it is time for a change. I pride myself on having one single great motivational factor that burns my inner flame regardless of circumstances, my internal drive to constantly better myself. Alas, one area I’ve reconciled needed the most improvement in my life was when I begin my day. Those who know me know I’m an energizer bunny. Constantly moving, always up, running on pure adrenaline with a smile 97% of the time. That remaining 3%? I crash. I crash hard. I lose so much valuable daytime where I could be accomplishing a plethora of things, all in the name of inefficient sleep. I love sleep I do. However, I need to begin efficiently using it and my time.

Like all of us self-improvement junkies, I read the books and blog posts, watch the YouTube videos, follow the Instagram and Twitter accounts that show daily inspirational tips, I do it all. A singular common item they all preach: get up early start before everyone else. Eh…think I may have tried to ignore that part in the past…

No more now. So I’m giving myself a personal challenge, something simple that I know I can do. I’m going to get up at 4:30 am everyday for the next year. Yup 365 days straight. For the pundits out there, I’m a 22 year old young man, life happens so allow me to add a couple of stipulations:

  • If I’m out and about, because I know you all think on the weekends I stay at home playing monopoly and scrabble while watching documentaries on PBS, and the clock approaches 4:30 am then I have to take a picture of where I am and still write a post
  • If I’m traveling then to account for time difference I will still post at 4:30 EST. What a beautiful stipulation this is.
  • And no I won’t have prepared written blog posts you are getting my direct stream of consciousness at my time of writing. What you can’t see in the picture are my fingers crossed that my filter is even 1% effective at this hour.

I decided to blog this personal challenge of mine because accountability remains my second hurdle to overcome. I’ve gone and put this out there now so I have to come through with it!!

With that being said, I’m up (been up since 4:15 actually). Day 1 completed now to get at it before Mother Nature herself wakes up.

A final parting cliche. I got tired of waiting and planning, I simply realized there is no better time to start than right now.
