Hey there! I do not think that the film’s short comings lie on Brie Larson. Like you, my faults with the film lie behind the camera. Larson did what she had to with the material that was given to her.
It’s just unfortunate that the way Captain Marvel was written, and by extension the way Larson had to play her, gave fuel to the internet hate. I do too think that performances across the film was underwhelming though I am not too sure if the same reception would’ve been met by any other actress. A lot of what I’ve read about the dislike of Larson actually seems to stem from outside the movie and Captain Marvel became the unintentional battlefield, where a lot of the film’s faults were pegged onto her (like you’ve pointed out).
And to your point about Patty Jenkins/Wonder Woman, it is undeniable the care Jenkins had for that film. A lot of care for the character and world was quite clearly missing from Captain Marvel.
