The Imperial Museum, also known as Paço Imperial, is a historically themed museum located in the historic center of the city of Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is located in the former summer palace of Emperor Dom Pedro II of Brazil. The museum’s collection consists of items related to the Brazilian monarchy, such as furniture, documents, works of art and personal belongings of members of the imperial family.

The Imperial Museum operates in the former Imperial Palace of Petrópolis, d. Pedro II and the Emperor mentioned it in their diaries as one of their favorite places.

The collection, which includes symbolic objects such as the famous imperial crown, is divided into rooms that reconstruct the daily life of a family in Petrópolis and present cultural, political, social and economic aspects of Brazil in the 19th century.

The Imperial Palace, where the aforementioned schools were located, was transformed into the Imperial Museum of Petrópolis only during the government of President Getúlio Vargas. By decree of March 16, 1943
, then president Alcindo de Azevedo took over Sodré’s proposal, who wanted to see the palace converted into a museum. Alcindo Sodré, who studied there, was named the institution’s first director.

Much of the interior decoration has been preserved, allowing visitors to step back in time and experience the environment that the emperor frequented. You can see the royal family’s furniture, documents, artwork and personal belongings.

The Royal Museum of Petrópolis contains very important exhibits, such as: the crown of Pedro I, the crown of Pedro II, the last portrait of Pedro I, the famous painting “Valladotrono”, and the pen of Princess Isabel that used to sign Urias.

The Imperial Museum of Petrópolis also contains a collection of around 50,000 volumes and 250,000 volumes of other important scientific research documents.
