Perhaps your co-workers simply balk at calling men with similar favorable skills, “mum”?

I’ve worked for several women, a couple of whom were highly placed in the company. Their character as “empathetic, nurturing managers” was actually something I valued pretty highly in our work relationship.

I mean, what an utter relief! Even though one of them was so “by the numbers” that her peers learned to “fear her files” when she walked into management meetings, she still made sure that our department was a non-competitive team environment, where no one felt the least hesitance to openly discuss their obstacles or the occasional need for remedial advice.

Just try to enjoy that with many male managers…
