Men like James and minorities were the primary soldiers for the Vietnam War. The wealthy had college deferments or friendly opinions from doctors who were also friends of the family that provided medical deferments. The story illustrates the frustration that James has in dealing with his father and his generation. Now that we rely on a volunteer military force, the divide is even more sharply pronounced.
