Do You Ever Feel Stuck in Your Head?

For the past few years, I’ve been busy researching and writing my new book, Life in Five Senses: How Exploring The Senses Got Me Out of My Head and Into The World. It’s available now for pre-order, and hits the shelves on April 18th.

I was inspired to write this book after a visit to the eye doctor shocked me into the realization that I spent so much time stuck in my head that I’d allowed the vital sensations of life to slip away, unnoticed. I’d been treating my body like the car my brain was driving around town, but my body wasn’t some vehicle of my soul, to be overlooked when it wasn’t breaking down. My body — through my senses — was my essential connection to the world and to other people.

That “lightning-bolt moment” revealed three truths:

● I wanted to appreciate the moments of my life more fully

● I wanted to get out of my head and into my life (do you ever feel like you’re stuck in your head, or trapped behind screens?)

● I wanted to connect deeply with the world, with other people —with myself

I decided I would study my five senses. I didn’t want to miss another minute.

Working on this book was such a joy, and I can’t wait for it to be in readers’ hands.

Life in Five Senses goes on sale April 18, 2023

Want a preview? Read an excerpt here. If you pre-order the book (only a week left!) you get access to an exclusive series of bonus videos I created with experiments to help you start exploring your own senses. If you’re intrigued and inclined to buy the book, it’s a big help to me if you pre-order it now. Pre-ordering is one of the best ways to support authors and their work — it builds buzz among readers, booksellers, and the media.

I’ve also been sharing tips and insights from my research into the five senses on my site. You can explore articles and resources about different ways to tap into your senses, take my new Five-Senses Quiz to learn “What Your Neglected Sense?” (people are loving this quiz!), listen to podcast episodes where I share tips and anecdotes from writing the book, and more.

Tapping in to our five senses offers us so many concrete, manageable ways to make our lives happier, healthier, more productive, and more creative. Curious? Check out…

With every book I write, I think, “Ah, I’ll never enjoy writing any book as much again.” And then I do! It was a joy to write this book. I hope that reading about my experiments and experiences will have you springing out of your seat to engage with your own senses.
