Whitmer Action Moment: Helping Women. Period.

The 2018 election is a long way off, and I’m not a patient person. So I want to use this campaign network we are building to start improving the lives of Michiganders in whatever way we can right now. To that end, today we are launching our first “Whitmer Action Moment.” Periodically, we will post a new WAM highlighting a need or cause, so stay tuned for more!
There are so many worthy organizations out there, but I decided to highlight for this first WAM one that I learned about last year. It’s called Helping Women Period, and the goal is to ensure that women and girls have the products they need, when they need them, by supplying shelters and other places with feminine hygiene items. Did you know that menstrual products are not covered by food stamps? Every day, there are women who miss work, girls who miss school, or others who endanger their health by using unsanitary solutions, because they don’t have the items they need. And yet, many shelters and food pantries don’t specifically ask for these donations. When they do get them, they fly off the shelves.
So today, our WAM is to stock local shelters and pantries with feminine products, so the women and girls in need in your community can have the dignity and safety of this basic medical necessity. Just drop off a donation to one in your area, or you can donate online.
Bonus activity: Call your state representative and senator and tell them to support legislation eliminating the “tampon tax.”
And finally, please feel free to give us suggestions for a future WAM!
