Don’t create a sense of urgency, foster a sense of purpose.

I really like your premise. Having a strong connection to purpose, even more so with a truly shared purpose, will create the byproducts of urgency: high output, hitting deadlines against obstacles along the way, working late, working hard, etc. But when driven by purpose, it’s real. It’s genuine…not artificially produced by “management.” When a sense of purpose is shared, a shift in direction is possible, even if it’s hard and means work is thrown out, because the team will see it’s the right thing to do. When the team is driven by urgency, change is resisted at all costs.
