Why I Keep A Journal Everyday

I am willing to bet that you can’t think of a reason why you would ever benefit from keeping a daily journal, because neither did I. In the long run, daily journaling improves memory, verbal skills, writing(obviously) and is very therapeutic. But as I wrote in Habit #3: Exercising we prefer instant gratification over long term benefits, so how can we make this habit stick?

  • Recording your daily diet will make you feel motivated when trying to develop healthy eating habit.
  • Writing about the people you’ve met or helped triggers good self-esteem.
  • Jotting down your ideas results in a boost of confidence.
  • Listing what you’ve learned will give you a feeling of self-growth.

All those above come with instant gratification as well as long term benefits, but the reason why I started my journal is to better learn from and cope with my mistakes, slips, blunders and faux pas. Writing them down along with possible resolutions helped me get over them.

It worked great unitl I realized, the only way to have enough content to keep daily records of my errors would have to involve my wife’s perspective. To her disappointment a change of subject was imminent, and the format was revised to something even my kids can participate in, and they do. We write down three things:

  1. What was my best part of the day?
  2. What was the worst part?
  3. What did I learn today?

Many times the answer to #3 is how I should have handled #2.
