Benefits of Trex® Decking

And why it’s better than steel or wood!

What is Trex?

Trex decking is an eco-friendly wood alternative that’s durable, beautiful, and functional. Here are five reasons why we at Grounds For Play use Trex decking for our playgrounds.

1) Provides a natural look without the maintenance.

One of the great features of Trex is its beautiful wood look: natural wood-grain pattern, authentic color streaking, and rich color. Get the natural look of wood without the maintenance!

2) It’s made from recycled materials.

Trex decking is made from 95 percent recycled materials, such as reclaimed wood, sawdust, and recycled plastic from many common household items, such as grocery bags. Using this product helps reduce the stress on solid waste landfills.

FUN FACT: The average 500-square-foot Trex deck contains 140,000 recycled plastic bags!

3) Durable and protective outer shell.

Plastic-coated punched steel and expanded metal decks are subject to rust, wear, and vandalism that causes the loss of coating. Thanks to a protective high-performance shell, Trex:

  • Won’t crack or peel like most steel decks and splinter like wood decks.
  • Provides resistance to rotting, fading, staining, scratching, and mold.
  • Only requires an occasional cleaning with soap and water or a pressure wash.

4) Less likely to expand and contract.

Trex decks are firm and stable. Plastic-coated punched steel and expanded metal decks are subject to movement due to natural expansion and contraction. Trex decks are constructed of several different pieces of material and have a natural tolerance for expansion and contraction that prevents distortion of the shape of the deck.

5) Surface is more resistant to slips and heat.

Trex decking provides a slip-resistant surface, even when wet! When a child steps on a Trex deck, you can rest assured knowing they are less likely to slip than if they are stepping on a plastic-coated metal deck. Additionally, on a hot day Trex decks are slightly cooler than other’s steel decks.

In addition to Trex, we at Grounds For Play only use high-quality materials and the best manufacturing processes to ensure our play environments are safe and will last for years to come. Learn more about our playground materials at groundsforplay.com.
