After 500,000 drinks and countless stories, we’ve learned a ton about what it takes to get people together. We decided it was time to apply these insights with a completely new app for meeting people.
We focused on the most difficult, but most essential part: actually meeting. There are plenty of apps out there (not to mention, bars) where you can endlessly browse or aimlessly message back-and-forth.
We built an app for all the people who, like us, are tired of playing games, and simply want to meet great people.
Grouper — meet quality people with your friends. Let us do the work. Here are a few highlights of how it works:
- Benefits with Friends: it’s still 3 friends meeting 3 friends over drinks. We found that having your friends there makes it a lot more fun and comfortable.
- Choice + Photos: the biggest change is that you will have more choice in who you meet. You can now choose between friends-of-friends matches (complete with photos), and you’ll meet people you mutual match with.
- No Messaging, Just Meeting: there is no messaging in the app, we just take you straight to scheduling a Grouper. No more awkward, endless, or non-existent messages.
- Blind Mutual Match: with a classic Grouper twist, we still won’t tell you which mutual match you’re meeting up with, so there’s still some mystery.
- Mobile Only: the new Grouper will only exist as a mobile app, for iPhones to start, and later Android. (Non-iPhone users cannot plan Groupers, but they can attend them as friends).
We recognize that we’re trying to solve a really, fundamentally hard problem, and it will likely take some time to really nail it. Getting people together is challenging, as we all know from personal experience.
We’re confident, though, that it’s a fight worth fighting. At our core we’re social creatures, and getting together is perhaps the single most important thing we do. The paradox of our technology is that, on the one hand, it can be used to bring us together like never before, but on the other, it can leave us distracted and isolated. This inspired our manifesto:
Our mission is to actually bring people together; to make real connections; to experience new adventures; to use technology to live in the moment, not escape it. Because getting together with great people is what makes life worth living. And we make it happen.
