How I Turned $500 into $50,000 Playing Online Poker With No Skill and No Luck

Last time I was in Vegas and got into an argument with a blackjack player about poker. Without getting into the details, he said it was “gambling” and I said it wasn’t.

I know this for two reasons. One, I invest people’s money for a living and understand the similarities between investing and playing poker. Two, when I was 13 years old I turned $500 into $50,000 within 3 weeks playing online poker. I wasn’t a good player (at that point) and I didn’t get lucky.

This is how I did it.

Heads up limit hold’em is a specialized game where you’re playing against one opponent and can only gain/lose a limited amount of money each hand. Whoever has all the chips at the end is awarded the prize, which is usually your initial bet minus 5% ($95 on a $100 wager).

It’s rare to find these days.

I would play multiple games (often as many at 7 per time) and bet the maximum no matter what! No skill, just hitting the max bet button over and over and over and over… you get the point.

I won 80% of games played and was able to grind $500 into $50,000 in a short period of time.

The goal is to win the first few hands by pushing your opponent to fold. It doesn’t matter what’s in your hand. The strategy assumes that if you bet strong the first few hands your opponent is likely to fold unless he has a great hand relative to the specific game (which is about 15% of the time). If your opponent is a logical thinker and isn’t in on what you’re trying to do, you’ll start hand 3 (or 4, or 5, etc.) with a (potentially decent size) chip lead.

As soon as the game starts, you have a 50% chance of winning if you bet out every hand. But if you win the first hand, that chance begins to increase. Win the first and second hand, that chance increases even more (and so on).

Limit is a game of mathematics. I’m no mathematician but if you do want to run this technique by one, they’ll be able to tell you the exact probabilities of winning each game if you can win the first, second and third hand (or so on.)

Happy Gaming…
