Shohei Ohtani’s Number 1 Hitting Drill

2 min readFeb 18, 2025

This is Shohei Ohtani’s number 1 tee drill. How do I know it’s his number 1 tee drill? I’ve found at least 3 different videos of him doing this drill in different locations. I’ve also found a video where he talks about how he does a lot of tee work and soft toss. I’ll put all three angles of him doing this drill that I found at the end. I’ll also put a bit of his home run swing in games at the end to. Use the chapters below to find them easier.

So let’s get into it.

He starts where he’s almost facing and sometimes is facing the pitcher’s mound. Bat is almost perfectly vertical. He takes a step in with his front foot. Crosses his back foot behind his front foot and places it right where he will swing from. Then lifts his front foot to cereal bowl level. Where you can practically put a cereal bowl on your leg without spilling. Then brings the front foot down almost touching the ground then brings it out. While the front foot is coming out, he coils his top half back. I’d probably say it’s further back then his normal swing overemphasizing the rearward spin. While he elevates his hands a small bit and points the head of the bat towards the pitcher. Then he goes through with his normal swing.
