My Immigrant Mother’s Difficult Job Search
Megan Reynolds

This is so sad! I’m also an immigrant and I’ve been in America for 14 year. We got here when I was a teenager so my Asian accent was gone in 3 months and people just assume I was born here, so I had a much easier time getting jobs, adjusting etc. whereas my mom had a terrible time living here. I had to speak for her because she’s embarrassed of her accent, even though she’s fluent in English. It was a difficult dynamic because she was like a child, and I was the parent who had to show her how everything works. Luckily, my dad made a lot of money in his career so they both retired in Asia, living the upper middle class dream.
