Here is some information about the smiths :

Morrissey and Johnny Marr (real name Johnny Maher whom he changed to not be confused with the drummer of the Buzzcocks ) meet onMay 20 , 1982at Morrissey’s home in Stretford (384 Kings Road). Marr is looking for a good lyricist, even a singer, for the group he wants to start and decides to visit Morrissey, whose song texts he knows through a friend, Billy Duffy, future guitarist of The Cult . and a former member of a band Morrissey fronted, The Nosebleeds. Morrissey presents him with some texts he has written, including Suffer Little Children , a murky text inspired by The Moor Murders . After having recorded several models with Simon Wolstencroft (future member of The Fall) on drums, Morrissey and Marr recruited drummer Mike Joyce in the fall of 1982. Joyce had formerly been a member of punk bands The Hoax and Victim. They recruited Dale Hibbert as bassist, who provided the band with use of the studio where he worked as a recording engineer . In Marr’s opinion, neither Hibbert’s personality nor musical style suited the band well. The latter was replaced after the group’s first concert, a concert taking place at the Manchester Ritz onOctober 4 , 1982, by a friend of Marr, Andy Rourke. The group will be called The Smiths. According to Marr, “We wanted a very normal name … not something that sounded like spacemen or some kind of bullshit . “

Morrissey improvising as a singer, the quartet performed for the first time in public. Their first single, Hand in Glove , was released in May 1983 on the independent label Rough Trade . It is followed by This Charming Man , number 25 on the British charts inNovember 1983, and What Difference Does It Make? , number 12 inJanuary 1984[ 4 ] . In February1984, their debut album, simply called The Smiths , sold 300,000 copies, taking second place in the UK charts. Two songs,Reel Around the FountainandThe Hand That Rocks the Cradlewere controversial because some tabloids claimed they were about paedophilia, a claim the band strongly denied. The album was followed the same year by the singlesHeaven Knows I’m Miserable Now(The Smiths’ first top-ten hit) and William, It Was Really Nothing , which featured How Soon Is Now? on its B side.

The group tours a lot in the UK but rarely in Europe (the concerts in Paris onMay 9, 1984, to Eldorado, then theDecember 1 , 1984at the Parc des Expositions, Porte de Versailles, are the only French dates in the history of the Smiths).

Towards the end of 1984 The Smiths released an early compilation, Hatful of Hollow , featuring singles, B-sides and songs recorded for the BBC. The Smiths were voted best group of the year 1984 by the readers of the NME (title taken by the group each year until its disappearance in 1987) [ 5 ] .

In 1985 the band released their second album, Meat Is Murder . This year the band embark on extensive tours of the UK and USA, and record their next studio album, The Queen Is Dead . However, the group encounters difficulties. A dispute with Rough Trade delays the album, completed inNovember 1985, nearly seven months, and Marr began to experience stress from an exhausting schedule: lots of recordings and touring. He would later say: “I was very ill… I drank more than I could handle” [ 6 ] . Andy Rourke was fired from the band in early 1986 due to his heroin use. He receives the notice of his dismissal by a post-it stuck to the windshield of his car: “Andy… You leave the Smiths. Goodbye and good luck, Morrissey” [ 7 ] .

Rourke was replaced as bassist by Craig Gannon (former Aztec Camera and The Bluebells guitarist ), but was reinstated after a fortnight. As a quintet, with Gannon on rhythm guitar, The Smiths recorded the singles Panic and Ask (the latter with Kirsty MacColl on backing vocals), and performed in the UK and US. Gannon left the band inoctober 1986.

The Queen Is Dead was born in June 1986 with Alain Delon on the album cover. At the end of 1986 , the band changed labels and joined EMI , although they never released for them. But for EMI, the beginning of the year 1987 looks very bad. The Smiths do release two new singles ( Shoplifters of the World Unite in January as well as Sheila Take a Bow in April), perform at the San Remo Festival in May, but it looks like Johnny Marr is somewhere else already. The guitarist feels stifled in a group now focused around the personality of Morrissey. His enthusiasm for dance , electrofound no expression: “The Smiths had become a kind of club where all new influences were discredited, even taboo” he confided to Johnny Rogan for his book on the Smiths Morrissey and Marr, the Severed Alliance ( 1992). the August 8 , 1987, Johnny Marr announces that he is leaving the group by sending a message to the NME : “What in the past made me happy makes me unhappy, I had to leave” . It is therefore “posthumously” that theSeptember 28 , 1987, Strangeways, Here We Come . As an epitaph, the group decided by mutual agreement to release a live album Rank (1988) taken from a concert given at the National Ballroom in Kilburn onOctober 23, 1986.
