McCain is an Old School politician. He stood up to the hatemongers when he ran; he fought against torture and waterboarding. He had his surgery precisely when the GOP needed his vote, which gave other senators time to deal and get some feedback and do some research. He’s done some stand up things, no doubt.

But he’s also a legendary womanizer (or was). He railed against a repeal to Obamacare…and then voted for it. He has worked some huge pork deals for military contractors and insurance companies and others that benefited no one but the companies that paid him.

But he does play by the well established rules in Washington. And when push comes to shove, he’s not going to do something crazy. He ran with Sarah Palin not because he liked her, but because his team thought she could help him win (age and youth and all).

In short, he’s dependable not so much to his constituents but to the inside the Beltway code of ethics.

I’m interested to see if, now that his time is surely winding down, he is more dedicated to leaving a legacy for average Americans or simply running out the clock.
