August 2018: Surround Yourself in Summer
Now that summer’s in full throttle, it’s time to make the most of those sultry, beach-worthy days. Whether your idea of paradise is a private tropical island or a sweet hammock by the lake, read on for ways to create and enjoy your ideal vacation home… even if it’s right here in the city!
The Story: Summer Home of Your Dreams
The Jump Off
When it’s hot and muggy, nothing says relaxation more than the cool and tranquil atmosphere of a summer home.
Decorating a second home can be liberating — this is, after all, a place where you can incorporate a bit more whimsy and creativity into your design. Whether it’s a headboard made from painted oars or a seahorse hallway runner, you can let your imagination run wild.
Once you’ve furnished, painted and accessorized your dreamy little part of paradise, you’ll want to enjoy it. So pack light. The whole point of a vacation is to leave your old self (that overscheduled, overdone part of you) at home! That means finding the perfect travel accessories and that all important 3 ounce bottle of sunscreen. With just the essentials, you can keep your summer home a peaceful retreat and just lay back and soak it all in.
The Wrap Up
Even if you’re landlocked for the summer, you can still channel those beachy vibes at homeby incorporating summery designs — think light colors and lots of rattan. When you’re all settled in, wherever you are, make sure to enjoy your vacay/staycation with some quality summer reading and a breezy cocktail. Feel like sharing the summer love? The Gabriele Moment: In Love with Turquoise
Our recent trip island hopping in French Polynesia definitely checked some boxes on my bucket list. Bora Bora’s dazzling turquoise waters, Rangiroa’s magical marine life — our expedition on the National Geographic Orion was unforgettable. Seven a.m. wake up calls were rewarded with meals cooked by a private chef and wild adventures (like snorkeling with sharks in the Blue Lagoon). We followed a pod of dolphins on their morning swim, explored florescent coral reefs, paddleboarded across the water and enjoyed the local javelin competitions. There was always something new and exciting to discover — that is, when we weren’t lazily sunbathing on pristine, postcard-worthy beaches. It was all over too soon, but those memories will be with me forever.
