How Might We Help User Not to be Overwhelmed by COVID-19 Information? — Binar Academy UI/UX Bootcamp Challenge: Chapter 4

🔵Challenge Overview

Our class is divided into five-person groups for this task. I joined the ICHI group, which also included Wahyu Diansyah, Bintang Teguh Pinandita, Naomi Jasmine, and Anggita Tri Ayuningtyas. In order to complete Challenge Chapter 4, we must first understand the steps that must be taken to prepare for research and then interview five users. The results of the interview are then converted into verbatim form, creating a User Persona that characterizes the product’s user. Then, using the Affinity Map or Affinity Diagram, we define the Problem Statement, which leads to the creation of a Customer Journey or Journey Map.

Following our individual creation of challenge chapter 3 in the previous chapter, we are now gathering all of the challenges from the group members to decide whose challenges will be deployed to create challenge chapter 4. The POV and HMW that Naomi had created were used by the ICHI group as a result of the discussion and vote sessions.

🔵Background

The COVID-19 epidemic has caused numerous changes in the way people live their lives, including changes in daily routines, financial difficulties, and social isolation, which has caused many people to stay inside, limiting their ability to socialize with others. Anxiety, panic, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, sleeplessness, and symptoms of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder are also common during the COVID-19 epidemic, ranging from moderate to severe. (3)

The social isolation experienced during the COVID-19 epidemic has undoubtedly had a large worldwide impact and serious psychological consequences. Even if social isolation is important to stop the virus from spreading, isolation is not something that people are “built” to handle for very long. (2)

According to a Mayo Clinic article titled “How to Manage Your Mental Health During the Pandemic,” staying in touch and interacting with others as a self-care method to preserve mental and physical health. (1)

In this project, we want to help and come up with solutions for maintaining the safety of social interactions.

🔵Research Plan

Before we do the research, we made a draft of every step we’ll do in each process. Started from the research plan we decided the purpose, scope, method, to the data analyzing process that we’ll do.

a). What is the purpose of this research?

To discover about user opinions and behavior throughout the epidemic, as well as how this impacts the user’s mental health.

b). What methods will be used in the research?

  • Questionnaire
  • In-depth interview

c). What is the criteria for the user you will interview?

  • Indonesian domicile.
  • The minimum age is 17 years.
  • Sensing a change in the level of social contact as a result of the epidemic.

d). Research question

The 3 main questions that form the basis of this research are:

  • How are user opinions and behavior in social interactions changing throughout the pandemic?
  • How does the user’s mental health be affected by the quality and intensity of their social connections throughout the pandemic?
  • What should the user keep in mind while meeting other individuals in person during this pandemic?

Then, as this challenge uses both questionnaire surveys and in-depth interviews as research methodologies, we prepared two questionnaires. The objective of this survey is to collect user data on social interactions and validate our project background, as well as to gather users who match the target user to be invited to conduct further research, the interview stage.

Research Question

e).What else do you need to confirm from the user?

The relevance of user responses to the research topic. Relevant answers to the research topic will be an important point that will take us to the required solution.

f). How will you analyze the interview results?

Data acquisition will be performed on all interview data obtained by mapping the interview data using an affinity map or affinity diagram, followed by the development of user personas, problem statements (POV), user journey maps, and how might we (HMW) questions.

Research Plan

g). What can be expected from the results of this research?

Relevant insights that can help us in developing solutions that are needed by users.

i). Research Timeline

Here is the research timeline we created. We chose to modify the topic of our research on April 8, thus we need extra time to revise the research plan and schedule that we set previously.

🔵Research Result

a). Questionnaire

The purpose of this survey is to collect user data on social interactions and validate our project background, as well as to gather users who are relevant to the target user so that they may be invited to participate in further research, the interview stage. Google Forms is the platform we used, and we were successful in gathering 91 participants.

More detailed survey results are available at this link.

b). In-depth interview

Five users who completed the survey and who we believe suit the target user were invited for this interview step. This interview intends to dig deeper into user attitudes and behavior about social interactions during the epidemic, the impact of social interaction quality and intensity on user mental health during the pandemic, and the factors that users consider when they interact with others directly during the pandemic.

This interview was conducted using two methods: in-person meetings with users and online. Online interviews were held utilizing the Zoom, Google Meet, and LINE call platforms.

You can access the interview documentation through this link.

🔵Transcript Documentation

After the interview, we provide the results in the form of a written transcript to assist us in analyzing the results and gaining insights from the interview. You can find the transcript documentation by following this link.

🔵Problem Statement

Following the transcription of the interview, we now classify the responses into a number of categories that relate to the problem that was the focus of the earlier interview using the Affinity Diagram method.

🔵User Persona

We created a persona to represent the user’s character based on the insights we gathered and analyzed using the Affinity Diagram.

🔵Point of View

POV is useful as a primary road map while designing. With POV we can concentrate on ideation and user problem solutions.

Point of View (POV)

🔵User Journey Map

The next step would be to develop a User Journey Map based on the POV we previously defined. This User Journey Map will allow us to understand how users will interact with the app that we developed over time.

🔵How Might We

We spoke about how we could make the most of the possibilities we had to help users solve their problems. The discussion resulted in several questions that may be considered as a baseline for the next part of the step:

🔵Lesson Learned

This challenge taught me:

  • How to work in a team.
  • Before conducting research, understand and prepare what is required.
  • Carry out the interview as planned from start to end.
  • Capable of analyzing interview results verbatim and breaking them down into User Personas and POV.
  • Know how to wrap up a problem statement and an affinity map.

🔵Finally, Closing

I hope everyone who reads this challenge finds it helpful. I’m well aware that there are still a lot of errors in this challenge, but we must always keep growing. If you have any comments for me, kindly leave a comment or contact me at gspuspamurtti@gmail.com.

Thank you very much!

I’m currently working on the next challenge, so please look forward to it 😁
A slight spoiler: I’m looking forward to finishing my upcoming challenge, which will include dealing extensively with UI Design.
