Have you ever thought if a neighborhood can influence child-development?

Well as you may not know or perhaps do there has been many researchers that have used the cognitive and psychological approaches to perceive the concept or correlation of low-income neighborhoods and child development.

However, this blog will show you detailed sociological theories to demonstrate how a child living in the low-income community will have different characteristics or features in future when compared to others who may not be living in a similar environment.

According to psyche sexual analytic theory, there are those typical growth stages of human development and growth which take places naturally and defines the future characteristics. However, proponents of this method gave a postulation to extend this concept that, there are also neighborhood factors which are crucial determining the growth of a child (Côté-Lussier et al., 2015).

Child Developmental and Aspects of Health in Low Income Neighborhoods

A study conducted by American researchers indicated that children between one to five years living in the low-income neighborhood are likely to be frustrated in their growth due to lack of some necessary attention required when they are growing. It makes them different from other community members (Elliot et al., 1996).

In human development, health is essential since it determines, the understanding and the IQ ability of a child (Vaden et al., 2010). For instance, in parenting and childcare, there is particular food within nutrients required for a child growth and development.

A balanced diet is very crucial in child development, whereby some vitamins are required to facilitate the development of cognitive part of the brain. Although many people have perceived balanced diet differently, the universal principle of balanced diet only refers to a situation of taking three meals a day which is sufficient and will all required nutrients (Elliot et al., 1996). However, with low-income neighborhoods, this is not applicable leading to some part of the brain and health body brain lagging behind.

Taking for instance, when an expectant mother fails to get the right and medical recommended nutrients, there is the high likelihood of diseases such as polio and other related health complication of the child (World Health Organization, 2013).

The Security Aspect in Low-income Neighborhoods

Research shows that local neighborhoods with low-income earners is always considered to be poor and is prone to crimes (Dawson-McClure et al., 2015).

According to the strain theory, people with low income are fast and always furious to strain to meet their basics. It means that there are chances of the same children to grow with the mentality of crimes. Children in their development stages are likely to follow characteristics of their parents are doing as postulated in the learning process theories, and therefore, by observing what their parents are doing are eventually adopting such practices in their adulthood age (Dawson-McClure et al., 2015).

The mode of impact manifested in the child development as far as the low-income neighborhood is concerned, there are aspects which are influenced by the social-economic life in low-income neighborhoods. As observed by other scholars and social researchers, the environment is a critical factor in determining the outcomes of child development concerning biological, psychological, social and cognitive behaviors.
