Unemployment In the Rear View Mirror
Kimberly Lew

i worked at a place that went through several rounds of layoffs at one point. i was lucky enough to make it through, but i saw a lot of other really good, hardworking people leave. some of it was handled well… some was not. i distinctly remember one woman who was away on a business trip with another co-worker on the day a round was happening. rather than waiting until Monday when she was back, i heard they called her while she was still travelling — in a car on her way to the airport, in fact, with the other person. and then she had to come the next week anyway to collect her things, turn in a laptop and company CC and stuff, rather than just being able to leave it and go. it was not one of the company’s better moments.
