I recall, the scuttlebutt but the truth in this and related articles popping up now that his life seems on the line and not everyone is willing to just forgive and forget would be hard to discern. What is not is his betrayal of the wife who waited for him and fought for him during his captivity, when she herself had become afflicted with cancer and disfigured in an accident. Usually my negative feelings were directed, probably unfairly, at the women who moved on too quickly, but that had more to do with my close friends, brothers really, who died, were wounded or otherwise suffered in that complex conflict.

I have never found McCain to be a brilliant legislator or bipartisan idealist or ethically motivated. To me it seemed everything he did was self-serving, self-promoting and insidious, with subtle digs at those around him. To me he was always a cynical opportunist with a huge chip on his shoulder. He was never someone I would trust.

A complicated situation now that he too is suffering from a virulent strain of cancer. But perhaps things have a way of evening out.
