Unfortunately, the issue is much more complex. Like the Senate, the Electoral College is an essential component of our Federalist form of government. It is not an isolated phenomena. Similar institutions exist in all federal systems. Thus, what it may be time to reconsider, is federalism itself. And that would, in all probability, be anathema to most Americans who prefer the local input and control that federalism provides.
