Thanks for sharing your journey. I am a business owner as well. I experienced similar resistance to change (which is why I took this course).

Through the course so far, I’ve learned that my role in advocating self management is to create the conditions for self management to emerge .

I’ve found the best starting point is with building up an individual’s sense of self. There’s a lot of unlearning that needs to happen. I find these 3 statements to be really powerful for my team.

  • “I really appreciate you for__________.” Recognize individual agency: acknowledge each a person’s action, decision making, effort and progress — it goes a long way in empowering them.
  • “This is a safe space. You can _________.” Champion safe spaces — weed out ‘shut down’ behavior, those that press the button and those that get turned off. Talk to them 1–1.
  • “You decide. I’ll support you.” Turn over decision making to other people. Coach and educate people if options need further insight.
