From Closet to Community: Transforming Spare Clothes into Hope
Ever looked at your overflowing wardrobe, wondering how to give those unused clothes a meaningful purpose? Or walked past those in need, wishing there was a way to offer them more than just passing sympathy?
In Pakistan, many of us have clothes, shoes, and other wearable items in good condition that we no longer wear, either because they’ve become too small or simply because they’re no longer our style. These clothes end up taking up space in our closets, but we don’t know where to donate them or don’t have the time to figure it out, even if we want to give them to those who really need them.
On the other hand, a large percentage of our population struggles to meet their basic clothing requirements. This includes the homeless, low-income families, and other underserved populations who frequently lack proper clothes. For these people, proper clothes is more than simply a matter of comfort; it is necessary for maintaining dignity, finding work, attending school, and engaging in social activities. A lack of appropriate attire can result in a cycle of poverty, social marginalization, and low self-esteem.
The problem is twofold:
1-Underutilization and Waste of Wearables
Many individuals often dump clothing that is still in good shape for small reasons such as size changes, style preferences, or just a desire for new items. These abandoned clothing add to garbage, fill landfills, and cause environmental deterioration. The ability of these wearable goods to be reused is frequently neglected, resulting in a considerable loss of resources.
2-Clothing Insecurity Among the Marginalized
Many people in our community do not have access to even the most basic clothing items. Lack of appropriate attire impairs their capacity to access opportunities, and feel included in society. Clothing insecurity adds to poverty, bias, and social isolation, marginalizing vulnerable communities.
Despite this stark truth, statistics offer a heartbreaking picture: In 2022, Pakistan became the world’s largest importer of used clothing, with imports totaling $250 million. In the same year, Used Clothing was the 44th most imported product in Pakistan. However, these figures mask a greater tale of unmet needs and missed possibilities. How can a country that imports such large volumes of used clothing yet face clothing insecurity among its own citizens?
In a world of excess, let’s ensure no one is left without the essentials.
But what if we could rewrite the narrative, transforming our closets into moves of empowerment and warmth for those who need it the most? Join us on a mission to redefine compassion through the transforming act of clothes giving. Let us reuse our spare clothes by giving them to people in need rather than leaving them in closets, being tossed, or burned.
The problem is compounded by a lack of organized, effective procedures for dispersing spare clothes to people in need. Many people want to donate, but they don’t know where or how to do so effectively. Similarly, beneficiaries may lack access to the processes through which donations are distributed, reducing the impact of potential charitable efforts.
This initiative was born out of the desire to address this gap. Inspired by the spirit of giving and the need for social responsibility, we decided to take action and establish a platform for redistributing gently worn spare clothing to the underprivileged.
Introducing ‘Wear and Share: Share Your Spare’, a revolutionary platform designed to tackle the issue of underutilized clothing. This project is the brainchild of 8 dedicated individuals and dozen volunteers, united by a shared vision of promoting sustainable fashion and community support.
- Our mission is to promote the reuse of the spare clothes for betterment. Because ‘your excess is someone’s essential’.
- Our aim is to collect clothes which are in good condition but no longer in need and then reach to underprivileged groups within Islamabad at first.
- Goals:
- To collect at least 100 clothes in a week
- Provide decent clothing to at least 50 underprivileged individuals in the first drive.
- Engage a minimum of 10 volunteers in the collection, sorting, and distribution process, fostering a sense of community and social responsibility
Methodology
Frequent Meetings and Planning
We have done regular team meetings and planning sessions to keep our team connected, engaged, and focused on our objective. These meetings not only help to improve communication and coordination, but they also build a sense of camaraderie and unity among team members. And let’s not forget the fun we have in the process! With laughter ringing across the room, we connect over shared aims and passions, making even the most difficult jobs joyful.
Marketing
Our marketing approach includes using social media, community outreach, networking and word-of-mouth to spread our mission.

We use social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram to reach a larger audience. In addition to our internet presence, we carried out a campaign and advertised at four universities. These activities included handing out flyers, distributing leaflets, and interacting with students. This university outreach enabled us to collect considerable donations and engage motivated volunteers. Almost 90% of our donors were university students.
Volunteers
We used Google Forms to streamline the volunteer recruiting process. Individuals who want to volunteer can join up using this form. We are glad to share that we had an enormous response in a short amount of time, with over 20 passionate individuals expressing their willingness to give their time and expertise.
Peer-to-peer fundraising
By allowing supporters to develop unique campaigns and use their social networks, we broaden our reach and encourage greater giving. Peer-to-peer fundraising leverages personal relationships to have a significant effect, allowing each supporter to become an advocate for our cause and an agent for change.
Collections:
To broaden our reach and ensure effective collection of donations, we pursued a policy of assigning focal persons in specific areas. Each focal person will be in charge of collection operations in their respective regions. By splitting the areas among various team members, we reached a larger geographic area and involved more community members in our cause. This method not only provides donations with convenient drop-off sites, but it also increases our presence. By this, we managed to increase contribution input and collected 160+ items in a week.
Processing:
We decided to take a hands-on approach to ensure the donated items are packed with love. All group members took on the task of washing and ironing the clothes, except for one member’s items, who due to a large quantity and final term exam were not able to do so, which were professionally washed and pressed by the laundryman. We wanted to make sure the clothes were not only clean but also nicely packed. One of our members visited local shops to find the perfect packing material and, after discussing with the team, we selected a transparent and comfortable packing wrapper. Our careful processing ensures that the donated items are respectfully presented to those in need. By dividing the resources among our members, we were able to work together seamlessly and get the job done.
Distribution Strategy:
We distributed the collected clothes to people who really needed them. We had chosen people living in tents near Bahira University and working individuals like Bykea riders. Our team went to these areas and gave the clothes directly to those who needed them. When we arrived, we laid out all the clothes in front of them, allowing them to choose the ones they wanted. Our transparent packaging made it easy for them to select the clothes that suited their preferences. This way, we empowered them to make their own choices and take home the clothes that brought them joy. This way, we helped our community and made a positive impact.
Challenges along the way!
While our clothes distribution drive was a success, we faced several challenges along the way and to overcome the challenges we faced, we employed several strategies:
Failure: The team was significantly impacted by our prior project’s midway collapse. It not only drained our morale but also took up a significant amount of our time and resources. Despite our disappointment, we understand the value of learning from our mistakes and using them as chances for progress. We were dedicated to recovering our momentum, restoring our spirits, and going forward with renewed commitment to make a good difference in our communities.
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.” — Winston Churchill
Shortage of time: From the approval of our idea to the execution, we had a very tight deadline, which made it difficult to manage the entire process efficiently. To combat the shortage of time, we decided to put in extra hours and our teamwork and collective effort due to Ek aur Ek Gyarah made this possible.
Hectic Schedule: Secondly, our team members had multiple commitments and responsibilities, making it challenging to dedicate sufficient time to this project. We divided tasks based on individual expertise, ensuring that each team member was responsible for an area they were comfortable with. For example, those with social media experience took charge of online promotions. So by following Amal’s principle of “Kam,Kam, Kam” we were able to overcome this hurdle too.
Logistical challenges: Thirdly, collecting clothes from donors and transporting them to our locations for washing and pressing was a logistical nightmare. Specifically, receiving clothes from Nust Students was difficult due to security restrictions. Additionally, many of us had never washed and pressed such a large quantity of clothes before, which added to the challenge. Despite the difficulties in collecting clothes from donors and transporting them to our locations, our team members persevered and ensured that the collections were done efficiently. We learned that to achieve our goals, we had to be willing to step out of our comfort zones. Washing and pressing large quantities of clothes was a daunting task, but we rose to the challenge and got it done.
Transportation Hurdles: Lastly, on the day of distribution, carrying the clothes from our homes to the distribution location was another physically demanding task, made even more difficult by the hot June weather. But we reminded ourselves that our efforts were for a greater cause, and that kept us motivated to push through the obstacles. Even on a hot June day, we persevered and distributed the clothes to those in need.
So in this way, despite challenges our team’s dedication and perseverance made it possible to overcome them and achieve our goal.

Future and sustainability Plan
Our project’s future vision is to continue positively impacting the community by sharing and reusing spare clothes. To assure the project’s advancement and sustainability, we are considering changing from a free distribution model to one in which a bare minimum payment of fifty rupees will be charged to cover operational expenses. The total cost we bear for the project was Rs 5000. This will allow us to sustain the initiative over time and reach out to more people in need.
Furthermore, we intend to make systematic changes to our processes to improve efficiency. This involves identifying more precise responsibilities within our team so that we can better manage time and resources. We are also exploring cooperation with other groups and seeking sponsorships to continue distributing clothes for free.
