Microsoft Fabric is a new service offering by Microsoft that aims to simplify the complex landscape of data analytics products and services. In the data analytics world, there are numerous tools and services available, and managing them can be a daunting task for data analytics departments. Microsoft Fabric addresses this challenge by providing a unified platform that brings together various Microsoft data analytics products under one umbrella.

The primary purpose of Microsoft Fabric is to simplify the data analytics process and remove the complexities associated with licensing, integration, and management of different tools. With Microsoft Fabric, data analytics professionals can focus on achieving results rather than spending excessive time understanding and configuring the underlying technology.

What sets Microsoft Fabric apart?

1. Fabric is a complete analytics platform

Fabric simplifies analytics projects by offering a unified product that integrates multiple subsystems and eliminates the need for complex integration efforts. It provides a seamless experience, optimized through software as a service (SaaS) delivery. Users can quickly sign up and derive business value within minutes.

Fabric caters to the specific needs of each team involved in the analytics process, ensuring that data engineers, data scientists, analysts, and business users can work efficiently.

Fabric offers seven core workloads:

  1. Data Factory (preview): Provides connectors to various data sources, intuitive data transformation, and pipeline orchestration capabilities.
  2. Synapse Data Engineering (preview): Facilitates Spark authoring, quick start with live pools, and collaborative features.
  3. Synapse Data Science (preview): Offers an end-to-end workflow for data scientists to build AI models, collaborate, and manage machine learning models.
  4. Synapse Data Warehousing (preview): Delivers a unified lake house and data warehouse experience with exceptional SQL performance on open data formats.
  5. Synapse Real-Time Analytics (preview): Enables real-time analysis of streaming data from IoT devices, logs, and more, with high performance and low latency.
  6. Power BI in Fabric: Provides powerful visualization and AI-driven analytics for business analysts, integrated with Microsoft 365 for seamless insights.
  7. Data Activator (coming soon): Enables real-time monitoring and notifications based on specified patterns in data, without the need for coding.

Fabric empowers users with a comprehensive suite of tools to handle diverse data analytics needs efficiently.

2. Fabric is lake-centric and open

Fabric simplifies data lake management by offering OneLake, a SaaS multi-cloud data lake that is automatically available to every Fabric tenant.

OneLake serves as a unified storage system, eliminating data silos and enabling easy data discovery, sharing, and governance. It is compatible with Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 (ADLSg2) and supports virtualization across clouds through “Shortcuts.” Fabric is committed to open data formats, using Delta on top of Parquet as the default format for all workloads.

This eliminates the need for separate data ingestion and allows all workloads to operate on the same data. With OneLake, customers can power various analytics offerings without maintaining multiple copies of data. Fabric also provides a universal security model managed in OneLake, ensuring consistent enforcement across different data engines.

3. Fabric is powered by AI

Fabric is integrating Azure OpenAI Service to unlock the full potential of customer data. With Copilot in Microsoft Fabric, users can leverage generative AI and conversational language to create dataflows, generate code, build machine learning models, and visualize results. Copilot inherits security and privacy policies from organizations, and tenant data is not used to train the language models.

4. Fabric empowers every business user

Fabric deeply integrates with Microsoft 365 applications to foster a data-driven culture. Power BI, a core part of Fabric, is seamlessly integrated with popular applications like Excel, Teams, PowerPoint, and SharePoint. Users can easily discover and access relevant data from OneLake within Microsoft 365, enabling them to drive more value from their data.

Fabric transforms Microsoft 365 apps into hubs for uncovering insights. In Excel, users can analyze OneLake data and generate Power BI reports effortlessly. Teams allow users to infuse data into their everyday work through embedded channels, chat, and meeting experiences.

Business users can incorporate live Power BI reports directly into PowerPoint presentations. SharePoint provides seamless integration for sharing and disseminating insights. Additionally, with Microsoft Graph Data Connect (preview), customers can unlock insights into various aspects of their organization, including customer relationships, business processes, security, compliance, and people productivity.

5. Fabric reduces costs through unified capacities

Fabric simplifies the purchasing and management of resources in analytics systems. Instead of provisioning computing capacity in multiple systems, customers can purchase a single pool of computing power that supports all Fabric workloads. This approach eliminates wastage and allows for efficient utilization of compute capacity across different workloads. By leveraging universal computing capacities, customers can freely utilize unused capacity from one workload in another, leading to significant cost reductions.

Existing Microsoft analytics solutions, including Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Data Factory, and Azure Data Explorer, will remain as robust, enterprise-grade platform as a service (PaaS) options for data analytics. Fabric represents a simplified software as a service (SaaS) evolution that can seamlessly connect to these existing PaaS offerings.

Overall, Microsoft Fabric aims to simplify the data analytics process, provide a unified platform for managing various data analytics products, and empower organizations to focus on achieving their analytical goals.
