How I discovered visual thinking
Dave Gray

After I retired from the Navy at 42 in 1989, I found myself working as a consultant for Coopers & Lybrand. I did not know what I was doing but quickly I learned I had to use a flipchart in front of groups I was facilitating (TQM was big then). I got over my fear of writing in public and found that I enjoyed diagraming ideas. Then my sister put me on to Inspiration software and The Fifth Discipline (and the Fieldbook) came along and I was off and running. Now I mind map and/or concept map for fun and learning (e.g., interviews by Charlie Rose) and find I enjoy learning more than ever. Dave — You were lucky to find your bliss so young — I hope many more do.
