We Can Have More Than One Purpose In Life

Purpose means activities that contribute to our pleasure and meaning in life. Purpose can be focused on either our own personal growth or it can be focused on the contribution you want to make in the world, although I think both are complimentary. Purpose is absolutely not driven by the current values society holds trendy or what others around you opine you should do. Society’s values are always malleable and priorities change from one era to another. Finding a purpose is looking beyond the mass thought and looking within.

Among the many books that talk about our purpose in life, Sanaya Roman’s book, “Living With Joy” offers insightful comments on this topic. She writes, “When you look at life purpose, ask your soul and yourself, “Am I doing this for me, for my highest good, or am I doing it to please others, to live up to their image of me? Am I accomplishing this purpose so I might receive a pat on the back, or recognition? Or am I doing it because it is something I want to do, that fits who I am and that brings me joy?”

Undoubtedly, it is about how you feel about something. What is it that you covet? Peace, freedom, joy, belonging or accomplishment? When you can pinpoint how you want to feel, your life will start manifesting it around you.

But we are not linear beings who want to feel a single feeling throughout our lives. How do you discover if you have more than one purpose?

As you accumulate experiences through life, your preferences may change. Sometimes, an old passion may no longer be exciting. You will discover new interests, develop new skills or find new talents you didn’t know existed within you. It’s beneficial to take stock periodically, see if you are still excited by the things you do and tweak them or once in a while, attempt something completely new.

A good way to start examining what your purposes in life might be would be to understand if you are someone who likes to focus on one thing at a time or if you like to have multiple projects going?

When you experience joy, excitement or engagement while doing one or multiple things at a time, what you really want to do will strike you much faster than the things you shouldn’t be doing.

There really is no set formula when it comes to finding your purpose. Your life is giving you clues all the time for the purpose you were put on our wonderful planet, all you have to do is find it and go after it like your life depends on it, because it does.

Humans are blessed with free will. We are free to make choices as we go through life. As soon as you let go of what you assume you “should” be doing and focus on what you love, everything begins to fall into place. And when your life works in the direction the universe deems it should, you positively affect those around you.
