Film is hard: an expression anyone in this industry has heard a many many times. Directors have to work countless hours on their craft to rise above “not garbage” level, and even when they do, it could be years before they get the attention they deserve.
This is why this list exists. Every one of these directors have created work worthy of attention, but have yet to receive the viewership I believe they deserve. I’m not sure where the future of Hollywood is headed, but I know these people will be a crucial part of it.
In short, I’m here to fanboy.
HILARY BELL
Nashville-based writer/director Hilary Bell makes movies that don’t feel like movies; they feel like hanging out. Characters are friends telling you what sucks and what’s funny. You had a bad first time? Your therapist is an idiot? Life is awkward; Bell makes it entertaining.
With a refusal to be flashy or overdramatic, every beat of Bell’s work reads as genuine. Jokes are just a stupid thing your friend said, drama is just another bad day. In GOGURT, losing your virginity was kind of boring. In HUNTER, people act weird about your disability. No matter what, friends are there to help you laugh at it.
