Applications of AI in the field of medicine and healthcare
We all know that most of the things nowadays are becoming dependent on Artificial Intelligence because of its many advantages. It gives better results by giving better predictions and in turn good accuracies and precisions. Secondly a large amount of population has started showing trust in AI as a new age technology and have started to understand that it can make their lives better.
AI in healthcare basically refers to having algorithms for tasks such as analyzing X-ray images or MRI scans and other medical documents or images which were till date only performed by humans. AI algorithms have been made for diagnosis of diseases, treatments , taking care of patients and development of new kinds of drugs.
Now we shall discuss some of the areas in healthcare where AI has been deployed and has also given good results-
AI for better diagnosis and disease detection
1- Using AI Algorithms for better diagnosis and less errors- In 2015, the US faced a problem that many of the doctors were unable to diagnose some diseases and were either not able to diagnose them or were able to do it wrongly. Then came up the idea that AI could be used to address this problem. The system developed could detect diseases better than many professionals .It diagnosed breast cancer at a better rate than more than 10 professionals in the US.
2- Buoy Health- Buoy Health is a product developed which uses AI to do the diagnosis of a person on the basis of what options he chooses. The user has to chose what are the symptoms he is facing and on the basis of that some possibilities are ruled out and his disease is predicted in the end. It also provides the patient what treatment and medicines he should take. Buoy Health was developed by the Harvard Medical School and it gave a good accuracy of 90% the first time it was tested.
AI for actionable insights- Enlitic, a US based company, works in healthcare and makes medical software devices for radiologists in an attempt to transform the industry of medicine with the help of AI. The company’s AI based platforms work on analyzing unstructured medical data which consists of the patients radiology images, blood tests and EKGs. Enlitic has helped the radiologists to interpret the images more than 50% better and also thousands times faster. While detecting bone fractures, it can even detect very tiny fractures which might not be visible to the naked eye.
1- Freenome early cancer detection- Freenome is a biotechnology company based in San Francisco and it has developed one of the most comprehensive products for detecting cancer at earlier stages. Freenome tries to combine expertise in microbiology and AI techniques to develop a blood test which can detect cancer at the early stages and save lives of a large number of people. It works on the multiomics platform which tries to detect cancer if there are any signs or warnings of the disease in the blood.
AI for preparation of drugs
The preparation of new kinds of drugs requires extensive research. That not only takes a lot of time but also companies have to spend a lot of money in the research process. Even after that, only 10% of the drugs are released in the market after the clinical trails. This rate is very low.
Now pharma companies have started to realize the potential of AI and how it can help them get better results with reduced costs. AI algorithms nowadays have much better accuracy than we human beings.
Adam robot- It is a robot which was developed by the University of Cambridge and the work was published in 2009. It is a robot which is capable of automating the entire scientific process. The robot was successful in finding new scientific information about the yeast breed ‘Saccharomyces cerevisiae’. Scientists have done good amount of research to confirm that the findings of the robot are true and precise. By the use of AI, Adam robot formed a hypothesis that certain genes in baker’s yeast code for specific enzymes which catalyse biochemical reactions in yeast. The robot devised experiments to test his statement, performed them and kept repeating the cycle.
BIOXCEL Therapeutics- BioXcel is a pharmaceutical company whose technology is based on Artificial Intelligence and develops medicines in neuroscience and immune-oncology. The company also has a re-iinovation program to identify new areas of application of the existing drugs.
BXCL501 is a drug designed by the company for treatment of agitation and opioid withdrawal symptoms. BXCL701 is another great drug developed by this company which is used in the treatment of some aggressive forms of prostate cancer .
BERG HEALTH- Berg is a company which works on mapping the diseases to accelerate the process of discovery and finally the development of the medicines. It uses the approach of ‘Back to Biology’ and traditional methods of research and development to produce products which can fight rare diseases. Recently it worked upon the treatment of Parkinsons disease and was able to find links between the chemicals inside the human body which were previously not known.
XTALPI- This company combines the technologies of AI, Cloud computing and quantum physics to find the chemical and pharmaceutical properties of compounds with small molecules which is required for the development of new kinds of drugs. It also has a technology which can predict complex molecular systems within days which would otherwise take months or weeks.
Atomwise- Atomwise is a company which focuses on combining the technology of convolution neural networks with huge chemical libraries to prepare new kinds of medicines. It has developed drugs for one of the most serious diseases like Ebola and multiple sclerosis. The company has its own neural network named AtomNet which can identify the characteristics of a patient for clinical trials and it can deliver results much faster than the traditional pharmaceutical companies.
Deep Genomics- In today’s world the most essential thing in any process is to identify the right people for that who are skilled in that particular field or task. This helps in getting the work done more efficiently and with less cost. Deep Genomics is a company based in Canada which works on identifying the right candidates for the development of neuromuscular and neurodegenerative diseases. Finding the right candidate increases the probability of that drug passing the clinical trials and being launched in the market. The company has worked on a famous project called Saturn. In that project they built the first ever system which designs drugs with the help of molecular biology.
After looking at the works of so many companies and the amazing products which have been developed which no one could even imagine of, we can conclude that AI has indeed changed not only the field of medicine but also the entire world . It has made impossible tasks possible and has improved the accuracy and speed of the existing systems/technologies by a huge margin. As science is getting tougher and complex, researchers in every field are needing the help of AI to give them quick and accurate solutions to work upon.
