Why You Should Do What You Love

Not Living Up To Other People’s Expectations

I love my parents and admire them beyond all measure in regards to their perseverance and hard work throughout their lives for coming to to this country and being able to build and provide great lives for my sister, my little brother, and I. However, their beliefs in how one should lead their life didn’t really align with my own personal beliefs.

When I was a kid, my parents used to tell me, work really hard, go to college, get a great job at a big company, and save money. I mean, is that how you achieve happiness? Is there no other way for me to live my life on my own terms to be happy?

So like any obedient asian child, I listened to my parents and tried it out until my brother died. After those sad months, I started to see life from a whole new perspective. I realized that life is way too short to do the things that you don’t love to or want to do and that if you are falling into this trap, you’re not really living, but rather just existing in someone else’s world.

So doing what you love isn’t just about being happy, its knowing that you’ve lived a full life. That you have lived on your own terms and not in the world someone else has created for you.

It’s Just Not That Simple

It would be easy to sit here and tell you that you should stop what you’re doing right now, unless it’s something you would be doing if it were your last day on Earth (Thanks Steve Jobs), but that would be unrealistic because the consequences of our actions ripple not only through our own lives, but that of others as well. Its not like all of us can drop everything on a whim in order to pursue our dreams.

So how can you do what you love so that you are happy?

Like I tell the people closest to me, if you want a different result, you have to change what you’re doing. For instance, if you hate your job, find out what you enjoy doing and start working towards getting a career in that. If you are unhappy in your relationship, consider starting to meet new people because life is too short to stay with someone that makes you unhappy or who doesn’t appreciate you the way you should be appreciated.

It’s Not Impossible

Ultimately, you are the only person who has the power to change the course of your life, don’t live it for anyone but yourself. So figure out what you want to do in your life and go make it happen. The essential key to accomplishing this is being proactive. Nothing will be different in your life if you don’t make it happen. But don’t expect things to turn around in an instant either, because good things take time, it takes patience and persistence.
