Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are government-sponsored enterprises (GSE) that provide liquidity to mortgage providers (such as your local bank, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America) through purchasing their loans. They usually buy the mortgages piecemeal to provide low cost lending for individual to please government requirements and enabling the average individual to achieve the American Dream. But they have recently opened up their doors to small and mid-sized investment companies that use the mortgages provide affordable housing. It would be interesting to see how this will influence growth among nimble entrepreneurs while competing against REITs.
