The Senate as representing smaller numbers equally to larger ones was a compromise not based on any ethical principle other than the belief it was better to have one country than more than one. The Senate directly violates the republican ideal because by institutionalizing the possibility of minority rule, it created the possibility of tyranny of the minority, from which we currently suffer.
