Dear married man,
Jessica Semaan

“I am oh so intrigued by your open marriage. Yet, I am not interested in an unavailable man. You see I want all the attention of a man. And you want the attention not of one but of two women.”

The author reminded me of the TLC show ‘Sister Wives: The rarely seen world of a polygamist family which follows Kody Brown, his four wives and their combined 17 children trying to live as a “normal” family in a society that shuns their lifestyle.’ It is a fascinating look at how a one-man multiple-wife relationship might work. And it involves children as well.

These Mormons, like many other cultures, support polygamy as normative; just like the US, Canada, Mexico and Europe support monogamy. There is no evidence to suggest that two women cannot love one man — the soaps are filled with such triangles. And there have been cases where one man marries two women and raises two entirely different families. It is just that the women and children didn’t realize it at the time.

So think about this the next time you buy into the fantasy wedding, marriage and children of the monogamous relationship.
