I have close to 2k followers, but very few of them are readers. Most are bots and spammers. On my last post, the Report on the Fourth, I received 55 views. My “followers” have grown steadily throughout the year, but I pick up more by commenting on popular posts (which I call “drafting” but someone around here dubbed “Coat-tail star fucking” CTSF, which is better) than from my own.
Publications increase actual readers. There are lots of publications that would publish your writing. You write really clearly and your arguments are both beautifully crafted and well informed. You might be able to get published in some of the pro publications, like The Billfold or Cuepoint.
The problem is that I’m not sure what happens to the ownership of the piece when you publish it in a publication. I’m sure each of the publications would tell you. You’d be better at understanding what they say than I am.
I don’t care about the ownership of what I write, but I also don’t want to have to vouch for its accuracy or authenticity. I don’t want someone else to get in trouble when it turns out I ripped off Jon Krakauer.
One other action you might consider is joining POMQA, a slack community for Medium writers. There is a “publications” channel on POMQA where people exchange information about what publications are looking for and accepting. There is also a “brags” channel where people promote posts that they think deserve attention. Some publication owners are on POMQA, so if you have a question about rights or ownership, they can answer those questions quickly.
You are a unique voice on Medium. I hope more people get to read your stuff.
