Trump just took a victory lap in Youngstown, Ohio and there were plenty of people there… the voters that swung the last election… who are happy with everything he is doing.
In addition to whatever else he is, Trump has become some kind of cultural apotheosis, just as Obama was.
Outside of loving Obama, what is the culture that resists Trump? Maybe the culture of “resistence” is the same as the culture of Trump. Where are the avant garde when you need them?
What if the old avant garde isnt’ avant garde anymore?
More could be done with art than with an argument, but high art stopped talking to middle America a generation ago. One rock band could unscrew the whole Trumpian nightmare, but where are the rock bands? Are there rock bands anymore?
Steve Bannon picked “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” as the campaign song for Trump. Isn’t that a weird choice? Not really. The song is, to some, a repudiation of the excesses of the 60’s “freedom” movements. Too much sex, too many drugs, too much “resistance”.
We went down to the demonstration
To get your fair share of abuse
Singing, “We’re gonna vent our frustration
If we don’t we’re gonna blow a fifty-amp fuse”
Trump culture is a reactionary one. It is the death rattle of the white male. Those nerds on reddit freaking out about an all female Ghost Busters or Wonder Woman aren’t wrong. Beyonce is at the Superbowl, bitches. Your cultural stock is in freefall.
The reason I can’t see the anti-Trump culture is because it has nothing to do with me. My guess is that it isn’t going to involve taking a lot of drugs, dancing naked, and howling at the moon, because most young women don’t rank that as a good time.
The future belongs to girls.
